Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples

This month at the United Nations is the twenty-second session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples. The Forum runs from April 17-28th and will be in person, the first one since 2019. The theme is: “indigenous peoples, human health, planetary and territorial health and climate change: a rights-based approach”.

The office of the Dominican Leadership Conference will host Indigenous from Peru, Brazil, and possibly Ecuador. The Forum is an opportunity for the indigenous to tell their experiences of the past year as well as meet with various member state missions. 

The First week of the Forum will be four days. The Forum has six mandated areas that will be reviewed:

  • Economic and social development
  • Culture
  • Environment
  • Education
  • Health
  • Human Rights

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will also be on review.

A session with the Human Rights Special Rapporteur will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 10:30-1:00 PM. And in the afternoon 3:00-5:00 PM. 

In addition, on April 20th the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly,  H.E. Csaba Korosi will host a Town Hall from 3:00-6:00 PM.

Regional Dialogues between Indigenous Peoples and Member States will be a focal point 10:00-11:15 – Eastern Europe, Russian Federation and Transcaucasia.  11:30-13:00 – Arctic. concept note as well as simultaneous meetings:

Additional dialogues will take place on April 26th. 15:00-18:00 Item 5(e) Regional Dialogues between Indigenous Peoples and Member States

  • 15:00-16:15 – Central & South America and the Caribbean
  • 16:30-18:00 – Africa. Africa concepts note 

The dialogues will be completed on the 27th.

This will be the first all in-person forum since 2019. 

Pray for a good outcome for the Indigenous. This will be first forum to be held following the decree made by the Vatican prior to Easter on the rejection of ‘Doctrine of Discovery.”
